  1. Vertebrate Pests. Have a backbone. Examples: Rodents, birds, reptiles, and other mammals.
  2. Invertebrate Pests. No backbone. Examples: Insets, spiders, ticks, slugs.
  3. Weeds: Any unwanted plant growing out of place.
  4. Diseases. Fungi, bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.

The following are methods of controlling pest ; chemical control, biological control and hygiene pest control.

Chemical Control: This is the most common method of controlling pest ,this is with use pesticides. Chemicals that either kill pests or inhibit their development. Pesticides are often classified according to the pest they are intended to control. For example, insecticides are used to control insects; herbicides to control plants; fungicides, fungi; rodenticides, rodents; avicides, birds; and bactericides to control bacteria.

Biological control: This method of controlling pests involves exposing them to predators or parasites. The use of predators and parasites is usually accompanied by a program in which pest-damaged fields are scouted and pest population estimates are made.

3. Hygiene Pest Control – Keeping your surroundings neat and clean is the number one way of pest control.

There are also other ways of controlling pest ,they includes:

  • Keep your house and environment clean.
  • Dispose of garbage regularly: Ideally, garbage should be disposed of every single day. An accumulation of garbage can lead to rat, rodents and cockroach infestation. This gets worse when you find rotten food particles all around the house. This can lead to spread of diseases especially if you have pets and small children in the house.
  • Fix nets on windows: Fix nets on your windows to prevent pests such as house flies, mosquitoes, spiders and large cockroaches from coming in. These nets will not only help with ventilation but also prevent pests from entering. This is a pretty effective way to keep pests out of your house. Also, if there are any broken window panes or glasses, repair them at the earliest to prevent insects from entering.
  • Dispose things not in use: If you have unused boxes lying around in the house gathering dust, or toys your children have outgrown get rid of them. These items only serve as hot spots for insects and germs. Sell or throw them away.


Pest can be so frustrating! Controlling pest is quite stressful and most times it consumes lots of money. In order to avoid pest in the house or where ever , it is better to keep the environment clean!
