Plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuits claim Jackson County’s Schneck Medical Center failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures that would have prevented a September 2021 data breach. As a result, hackers allegedly accessed patient names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, protected health information, health insurance information and other sensitive data. 

Schneck Medical Center is a hospital in Seymour, Indiana, that serves Jackson, Jennings, Scott and Washington counties.

Schneck Medical Center hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $1.3 million to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit. The settlement website is SchneckSettlement.com.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive up to $500 for ordinary data breach-related expenses, including up to four hours of lost time compensated at a rate of $15 per hour. 

Class members who experienced extraordinary losses related to the data breach can receive larger payments of up to $6,000. These payment caps may be reduced depending on the number of valid claims filed. 

All class members are eligible to receive 27 months of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through CyEx. These services include $1 million in identity theft insurance.

This settlement benefits all individuals who received a data breach notification letter from Jackson County Schneck Memorial Hospital, doing business as Schneck Medical Center, regarding a September 2021 data breach.

How To Be Part of This Settlement

In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 19, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Aug. 7, 2023.
