What Is Lufthansa COVID-19 Canceled Flight Class Action Settlement?

The settlement includes two subclasses: a subclass of consumers who have received refunds for their flights and a subclass of consumers who have not received refunds.

Lufthansa was allegedly forced to cancel certain flights during 2020 and 2021 due to flight restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. According to plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit, the airline company failed to provide timely refunds for these canceled flights.

What Is This Class Action All About?

Lufthansa agreed to pay out up to $50 million in claims under a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to refund consumers for flights canceled.  Case No. 8:20-cv-00885-MWF-MRW, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members who have already received a refund from Lufthansa can choose between a $10 cash payment or a $45 voucher for future flights with Lufthansa, Swiss International Airlines, Austrian Airlines or Brussels Airlines.  Class members who haven’t received a refund from Lufthansa can receive a full refund of their flight cost plus 1% interest.

Who Is Eligible?

The settlement benefits consumers who purchased tickets for a Lufthansa flight scheduled for between Jan. 1, 2020, and Aug. 16, 2021, and whose flights were canceled.

How To Be Part of This Settlement

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by June 8, 2023. The deadline for exclusion and objection is June 8, 2023. The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for July 10, 2023.

What Is The Pay For This Settlement?

Full refund, $10 cash payment or $45 flight voucher.
