According to the class action lawsuit, Kiplinger violated Michigan’s Preservation of Personal Privacy Act by sharing subscriber information without their consent. The publisher allegedly disclosed subscription information to various third parties before July 2016.

Kiplinger agreed to pay over $6.84 million as part of a settlement to resolve claims it violated Michigan privacy laws by sharing magazine subscriber information. The name of the case is Strano, et al. v. Kiplinger Washington Editors Inc., Case No. 21-cv-12987-TLL-PTM, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

What Is This Class Action All About?

Kiplinger hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $6,845,670 class action settlement to resolve the privacy allegations.

Under the terms of the Kiplinger privacy settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. Class counsel estimates each claimant will receive around $248. However, exact payments may be higher or lower depending on the number of participating class members. 

Who Is Eligible?

The settlement benefits individuals who purchased a subscription to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, The Kiplinger Letter, Kiplinger’s Investing for Income, The Kiplinger Tax Letter or Kiplinger’s Retirement Report to be delivered to a Michigan street address between Dec. 24, 2015, and July 30, 2016.

 How To Be Part of This Settlement

Class members who received a settlement notice do not need to file a claim to receive settlement benefits. Class members who did not receive a notice must submit a claim form by June 6, 2023.

All class members can submit an election form by June 6, 2023, if they wish to receive their payment via Venmo or PayPal. The deadline for exclusion and objection is April 24, 2023. The settlement website is KiplingerSettlemen.com.
